HSE Site Inspection Initiative

Construction sites across Great Britain in October and November will be targeted as part of an initiative to raise awareness of health issues relating to moving and handling materials.

Starting on Monday 3rd October 2022, site inspections will focus on moving and handling materials, to check employers and workers know risks, plan work and use sensible control measures to protect workers from injuries and aches, pain and discomfort in joints, muscles and bones known as musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs).

Last year, 40,000 construction workers suffered from injuries and aches, pain and discomfort in joints, muscles and bones. Injuries can have an impact on a workers’ ability to perform tasks, quality of life and in some cases, ability to work and earn a living. Furthermore, many can and do suffer from long term pain and discomfort.

Employers have responsibilities, and are required to provide employees with health and safety information and training, including specific information and training on manual handling injury risks and how to prevent them and work safely. Construction workers also need to recognise the long term health risks when handling and moving materials on site.
